NEH Summer Stipends - abstracts due July 24, 2024

National Endowment for the Humanities

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is soliciting abstracts for the National Endowment for the Humanities' Summer Stipends program. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. The study of the humanities per the NEH includes but it not limited to "language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of the social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

This program will only accept one application from each institution for all applicants holding tenured or tenure-track positions. There are exceptions to the faculty nomination process for non-tenure-track faculty, staff members, and emeritus faculty - for additional information please contact RSP. As such, RSP is conducting a limited submissions competition to nominate one UNI faculty to compete for NEH Summer Stipends in the fall of 2024. This internal competition involves the submission of a one page project abstract, which is scored by UNI volunteer faculty reviewers. The highest scored abstract will be nominated by the Office of the Provost to submit a full proposal to NEH.

A Summer Stipend provides $8,000 to support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months. Projects may begin as early as May 1, 2025. Summer Stipends support projects at any stage of development. NEH funds may support recipients' compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research. Eligible projects usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials and publications, archaeological site reports, translations, or editions. Projects must incorporate analysis and not result solely in the collection of data.

To be considered, please email a one page abstract to rsp@uni.edu by 5:00 p.m. on July 24, 2024. Abstracts will be blinded and scored by faculty reviewers using the NEH review criteria below. Applicants will be notified of decisions by August 9, and nominated applicants must submit their proposals to NEH by September 18, 2024.

Review Criteria

Reviewers are asked to apply the following criteria in assessing applications:

  1. The intellectual significance of the proposed project, including its value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both;
  2. The quality of the conception, definition, organization, and description of the project and the applicant’s clarity of expression.;
  3. The feasibility and appropriateness of the proposed plan of work.;
  4. The quality or promise of quality of the applicant as an interpreter of the humanities; and
  5. The likelihood that the applicant will complete the project (not necessarily during the period of performance), including, when relevant, the soundness of the dissemination and access plans.

The application guidelines are currently available and provide additional program information and guidance. NEH staff will host a webinar on August 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. CST that includes a discussion on the review process, application components and writing tips. A link to the webinar is available through the NEH program website.
